The most important event in the gay and lesbian calendar is the Christopher Street Day (CSD). Every year on the first weekend of July half a million participants and visitors celebrate and demonstrate in the city centre. Aside from the partying and the fun, there is always a political focus that is illustrated through a new motto each year. For those who are lucky enough to visit Cologne for longer than a weekend, during the two weeks prior to the CSD there are all kinds of gay and lesbian events on offer, from cultural and sporting events to the "Veedelsfest" quarter party in the trendy "Bermuda Triangle" quarter, close to Rudolfplatz.
Together, on the 6th July at the CSD Parade they will demonstrate that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals will be equally treated legally and socially accepted. The street festival in the Cologne Old Town and the AIDS-Gala of the AIDS-Hilfe Cologne are, as well as the parade, an inherent part of the CSD weekend. A colourful stage programme, numerous information-stands and various political events await you.
To begin with, Cologne Pride, the two week supporting programme of CSD offers multifaceted surprises from all areas. On the 23rd June, Fantasy Pride in Phantasialand kicks the whole thing off. WomenPride will also start here, which combines all the events for women during the whole time of Cologne Pride. Whether it be readings, film screenings, panel discussions, partys, barbeques, seminars or other cultural activities, Cologne Pride and WomenPride offer something for every gay and lesbian, and their friends.
